3 day workshop for construction workers on "Earthquake Resistant Construction"

I am happy to inform you that, The Institution of Engineers (India), Manipur State Centre have successfully organised 3 day workshop for construction workers on "Earthquake Resistant Construction" Kshetri Shanglen, Thoubal from 10th  to 12th  of May 2019. Altogether, Thirty Four (34) participants from construction field including Masons and Engineers have participated at the training programme.

Er. Th. Joykumar Singh, FIE, Chief Engineer (Retd.), P.W.D. Manipur; Former Controller of Technical Education, Govt. of Manipur, Former consultant, State Hazard Safety Cell; Chief Engineer cum Consultant, Planning and Development Authority, Manipur and Presently Team Leader, Roche Consultants Pvt. Ltd, was the Chief Guest of the Inaugural. Dr. Ksh. Manglem Singh, Chief Medical Officer cum Senior Medicolegal Specialist, State Health Deptt., Manipur (Retd.) and Ar. B. Krishnakumar Sharma, Senior Architect, P.W.D., Manipur & Past President, Manipur Architects Forum were Guests of Honour. Er. N. Shyamsundar Singh, FIE, Chairman of the State Centre and Former Chairman, Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (Manipur & Mizoram) presided over the function.

The resource speakers consist of State centre committee members & Faculty of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur. During the course of the training programme, the state of the art of good concrete construction including introduction to concrete, production, placing, compaction and curing utilities of concrete, etc. were discussed. Various types of cement which are available in the market and its judicious/proper use were elaborated to the participants. Method of batching of concrete was also discussed and knowledge on proper use of gauge box or measuring box for volume batching was also given.

In addition, knowledge of reading of Architectural and Structural drawings were given to the participants so as to enable them to properly and ethically execute any construction work. The present status of the existing RC buildings of Manipur with reference to the 41h January 2016 Manipur Earthquake was also visually shown during the workshop. The need for concrete quality in earthquake zone and ductile detailing has been taught to the participants.
