

5 day short course for Mason on "Good Concrete Construction Practices"

I am happy to inform you that, The Institution of Engineers (India), Manipur State Centre has successfully organized a 5-day short course for Mason on "Good Concrete Construction Practices including Seismic Resistant Construction" at the Seminar Hall of IEI-MSC, Takyel, Imphal from 8th to 12th March 2019. Altogether, Seventy-Five (75) participants - 49 Masons and 26 Students from various Engineering colleges have participated in the training programme.
Er. Th. Joykumar Singh, FIE, Chief Engineer (Retd.), P.W.D. Manipur; Former Controller of Technical Education, Govt. of Manipur, Former consultant, State Hazard Safety Cell; Chief Engineer cum Consultant, Planning and Development Authority, Manipur and Presently Team Leader, Rodic Consultants Pvt. Ltd, was the Chief Guest of the Inaugural. Er. Kh. Temba Singh, FIE, Immediate Past Chairman of the State Centre and Chief Engineer, PWD Manipur and Ar. B. Krishnakumar Sharma, Senior Architect, PWD Manipur were Guests of Honour. Er. N. Shyamsundar Singh, FIE, Chairman of the State Centre and Former Chairman, Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (Manipur & Mizoram) presided over the function.
The resource speakers consist of State center committee members, Faculty of Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT) Imphal, and National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur. During the course of the training program, the state of the art of good concrete construction including an introduction to concrete- its advantages, proper use of ingredients, concrete making materials, proportioning, mixing, placing, compaction, and curing utilities, etc. were discussed. Various types of cement which are available in the market and their judicious/proper use were elaborated to the participants. Volume mix which is widely used in public buildings was also discussed in detail with proper use of measured boxes. Different types of compaction like mechanical and manual were also demonstrated.
The State of Manipur and the whole of the North-East region belong to Seismic Zone-V of India. Accordingly, damages during prominent earthquakes of India and the most recent Earthquake which occurred on the 4th January 2016 were also visually shown. The need for concrete quality in an earthquake zone and ductile detailing has been taught to the participants. In addition, knowledge of reading Architectural and Structural drawings was given to the participants so as to enable them to properly and ethically execute any construction work.
