Observation of World Environment Day 2019

The Institution of Engineers (India), Manipur State Centre celebrated “World Environment Day on the theme Air Pollution” on 5th June 2019 at the Training Hall of IEI(I), Manipur State Centre. Shri. Er. N. Shyamsundar Singh, FIE, Chairman, IEI Manipur State Centre presided over the function.

Er. Haobijam Linthoinganbi Chanu, AMIE, welcomed the august gathering that comprises of many a number of eminent retired Personnel, Senior Corporate members of the Centre, Engineers and Engineering students. In her welcome address, she mentioned that the United Nations (UN) began observing World Environment Day in the year 1974 and this year, China is hosting 45th World Environment Day on the theme “Beat Air Pollution”.

The theme speech was delivered by Dr. N. Premananda Singh, Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering Department, MIT Manipur. In his discourse, he explained about the causes, effects, and possible solutions of air pollution so that we can make an educated decision for Earth’s future. He elaborated that vehicle exhaust fumes, fossil fuel-based power plants, exhaust from industrial plants and factories, construction and agricultural activities, etc. are the causes of air pollution leading to global warming, health hazards such as human respiratory and heart concerns, wildlife endangerment and acid rain, etc. To combat the negative impact, he suggested taking up certain measures such as switching to a hybrid vehicle that runs on fully electric, less energy consumption, choosing to reuse our old materials instead of dumping them into the environment- the speaker added.

In his presidential address, Er. N. Shyamsundar Singh, FIE, Chairman of the State Centre briefly highlighted the negative impacts of environment pollution to our day-to-day life. He also emphasized on the current issue namely, the scarcity of water due to distortion in the hydrologic cycle as a result of negative impact of climate change. He emphasised the need for drawing awareness of all on combating air pollution.
