ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON “PILE FOUNDATION”

The Institution of Engineers (India), Manipur State Centre organised one (1) day Workshop on “Pile Foundaton” under the aegis of the Civil Engineering Division Board (CVDB), IEI on 26th May 2019 at the Seminar Hall of IEI(I), Manipur State Centre. Shri. Er. M. Ibomcha Singh, Controller of Technical Education, Govt. of Manipur graced the occasion as Chief Guest.
Er. Th.Komol Singh, MIE, Coordinator of the workshop welcomed the august gathering that comprises of many a number of eminent retired Personnel, Senior Corporate members of the Centre, Engineers, Students of NIT, Manipur, Students of MIT, Takyel and Head masons who are currently practicing pile construction works and delivered the welcome and keynote address. In his welcome and keynote address, he outlined the nature of soil type found in Manipur, the different type of pile foundations and different soil improvement techniques that are being adopted in and outside the state. To construct earthquake resistant building, choosing suitable foundation type is very important and pile foundation is a better foundation option for the state Manipur - he added.
The Guest of Honour, Er. Kh. Temba Singh, FIE, Chief Engineer, PWD Manipur and Immediate Past Chairman of the state Centre, also mentioned his views on the present trend of foundation system that are being adopted in the state. He also narrated the history of how pile foundation started in big construction projects of Manipur such as Manipur Assembly Hall located at Thangmeiband, Imphal and Manipur High Court, Mantripukhri, Imphal, etc. in the early stage of construction. Among the pile foundation, bored-cast-in-situ being easy in operation procedure is mainly adopted now-a-day but it is very important to control the quality and follow relevant IS codes during execution of this pile foundation type-he added.
The Guest of Honour, Er. Ch. Dharanikumar Singh, MIE, showed his concern on the need of constructing earthquake resistant building and mentioned the importance of organizing such type of workshops/seminars since the state Manipur is highly pone to earthquake.
In his address, the Chief Guest, Er. M. Ibomcha Singh, Controller of Technical Education, Govt. of Manipur, explained the importance of foundation system in any structure. He also emphasised the state Manipur is earthquake prone region and need awareness on the matter specially to people who are in construction field. He spoke on the quality control of construction such as maintaining required cover, spacing of ties and stirrups and water-cement ratio and special care that should be taken for curing time and construction joints. He emphasized the need for organising more workshops/Seminars on the same platform on various topics which are of concern to everyone.
In his presidential address, Er. N. Shyamsundar Singh, FIE, Chairman, IEI Manipur State Centre briefly highlighted the workshops/seminars that had been conducted by the state centre on safer construction of buildings against earthquake. Constructing any structure requires the joint collaboration of engineers, architectures and the masons who are going to execute the construction. He emphasised the need of spreading awareness of knowledge on construction of earthquake resistant building which is the need of the hour.
